Job Opening: Law Student Paralegal

The Public Defender for the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida seeks law students to work part-time as paralegals in our Early Representation Unit and/or our Behavioral Health Unit.

The Public Defender is an elected official who has a constitutional duty to provide legal representation to persons in jeopardy of losing their life or liberty who cannot afford to hire a private attorney. Our office employs nearly 230 lawyers plus investigators, mitigation specialists, secretaries, and paralegals to assist with the more than 65,000 cases we handle each year. We recruit locally and nationally with just one goal in mind: Putting together a diverse team of outstanding men and women from all racial and ethnic backgrounds who are able to provide high quality representation to our clients. 

Position Type: Part-time (OPS position)

Job Description

The paralegal assists with client intake interviews in correctional facilities and hospitals, requesting and processing records, records’ review, preparing calendars, files, documentation and follow-through.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Law student at a local university
  • Proficiency in MS Word
  • Excellent verbal, written, computer, communication and interpersonal skills
  • English/Spanish and/or English/Creole preferred
  • Reliable transportation, as this is an in-person position at TGK
  • Ability to work some weekends and holidays a plus

Hourly Pay

  • Law student who is not a Certified Legal Intern (CLI) - $23 per hour
  • Law student who is a CLI and has completed a CLI internship - $24 per hour
  • No benefits
