Big Brothers Big Sisters Names Public Defenders Office Partner of the
Year
This years Community Partner of the Year Award for Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Greater Miami (BBBS) was bestowed upon the Law Offices of Public Defender
Bennett H. Brummer at the recent luncheon honoring mentors. BBBS annually serves
over 5,000 children and is the lead agency for Governor Bushs mentoring
initiative.
"Every child we mentor is less likely to ever get involved with the juvenile
or criminal courts," Brummer said. "If we can help a child learn to read and
have hope for the future, not only that child, but our entire community, will
reap the benefits."
The honor acknowledges a decade of Public Defender support of BBBS and
outstanding service to Miami-Dade Countys youth. Several Public Defender
employees currently mentor children in elementary schools for one hour a week.
Brummer added, working with Big Brothers Big Sisters is an invaluable part
of our Anti-Violence Initiative in which we encourage staff to volunteer for
community activities.

the Public Defenders Anti-Violence Initiative.
Individual plaques were also presented to Corlette Floyd, the offices
director of support services, for 10 years with the mentoring program, and to
chief assistant public defender Carlos J. Martinez for his five years of
service.
We visit children in school and work with them in scholastic areas where
they are having difficulty, said Floyd. We also speak to them about any issues
they might be facing and encourage them to plan for their futures.
