ASSISTANT DEFENDER GETS TOP STATE HONOR

Miami-Dade's chief assistant public defender, Carlos Martinez, received this year's top honor from the state's Public Defender Association, the Craig Stewart Barnard Award.

Martinez was chosen recently as the association's first vice president who isn't a locally elected public defender.

Martinez has led the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office efforts to rehabilitate ex-offenders and advocate for juveniles who have been moved into the adult system. He also hsd worked on a statewide effort to help young people interact with law enforcement and avoid confrontations.

''He is well known for his efforts to improve public defender effectiveness, the criminal justice system and the practice of law in general,'' Miami-Dade Public Defender Bennett Brummer said in his nominating letter.
