ASSISTANT DEFENDER GETS TOP STATE HONOR
Miami-Dade's chief assistant public defender,
Carlos Martinez, received this year's top honor from the state's
Public Defender Association, the Craig Stewart Barnard Award.
Martinez was chosen recently as the
association's first vice president who isn't a locally elected
public defender.
Martinez has led the Miami-Dade Public
Defender's Office efforts to rehabilitate ex-offenders and
advocate for juveniles who have been moved into the adult
system. He also hsd worked on a statewide effort to help young
people interact with law enforcement and avoid confrontations.
''He is well known for his efforts to improve
public defender effectiveness, the criminal justice system and
the practice of law in general,'' Miami-Dade Public Defender
Bennett Brummer said in his nominating letter. |
